What to Wear for Your Newborn's Photoshoot
Yay! Your baby is on the way or maybe they are already here, and you are already planning for their first photoshoot! What great parents you are! Seriously, kudos to you for already being a rockstar mama. I know your day is clouded with opinions and overwhelmed with "top tips for baby" news lines, so I am going to get right into today's topic of,
What to wear for my newborn's photoshoot?
As a professional newborn photographer, I often am asked what the postpartum mama should wear for her session, below you will find my personal favorites, some examples of choices that mamas made for their own newborn's photography session, and overall suggestions for when it comes down to choosing that perfect outfit for your own in-home, newborn photography session.
Top 3 Suggestions for your outfit choice:
1. Make sure you are comfortable.
2. Make sure you feel beautiful in it!
3. Make sure you can move in it. (Give yourself the hug test - does it allow you to stretch all the way into the hug?)
Here are 5 bonus tips:
1. Stay true to yourself. If you always wear leggings and a flowy top and that is what you feel good in, then wear that! These are your images, we are photographing your story - maybe a little more glamorized than the every day hair tossed in a bun or maybe not. That is totally up to you and the look you are hoping to have in these memories.
2. Consider coordination over exact matching
3. Never wear Neon.
4. When in doubt, keep it timeless.
5. You can absolutely wear a matching mama robe and baby swaddle! This is one time where matching is totally adorbs!
Where to find your outfit for your newborn's photoshoot (in no particular order):
On a time crunch? You can totally find great options on Amazon, your own closet, and your local boutiques.

1. A flowy floral dress:
Like the one below. The great thing about this dress is that it can be worn on or off the shoulder. (Added Bonus: if you are nursing, it could easily be used as an everyday dress and have easy access for nursing).
2. A comfy sweater and leggings or jeans
3. Wrapped V-neck dresses
I feel like wrapped dresses are great for postpartum moms and usually are very flattering. Plus, easy for nursing mamas too. Always choose a color and design that looks great on you!

REAL LIFE EXAMPLES
Below you will find some stunning mamas (I added a couple of dads, too!) who chose perfect-for-them postpartum outfits. Every mama is different, and every postpartum journey is different. Personally, I gained about fifty pounds during my first pregnancy and could not fit clothing that I was fitting pre-pregnancy.
In the meantime, I leaned on flowy dresses to get me through that post-partum weight loss. Why? Because I love dresses! And also, because I had a June baby and being hot and heavy was not so fun in jeans. Anywho, I hope the message you receive from this little note is that: for your newborn's photoshoot, you should feel good in whatever you choose to wear.

What should the rest of the family wear for my newborn's photoshoot?
TIPS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
1. Keep it light. For in-home, newborn & family photography, I recommend keeping clothing lighter in color - keep it light in terms of feel too. You do not want anyone looking (or feeling) stiff and uncomfortable. OR if your home has a moodier feel to it, you could also go with darker colors.
2. Casual clothing can work great, but please make sure you pay attention to the details. Newish, clean shirts that are wrinkle free are a must. (If you don't know where your steamer is, no problem, toss it in the dryer with a clean wet cloth of the same or similar color or hang it in the bathroom while you shower).
3. Formal is great, too. Some families are a bit more formal in their everyday attire, so if this fits your style, then by all means, go formal. Keep in mind that it needs to "breathe" as you will be snuggling your baby. And so will most of the people in your session at some point for the photos.
4. If you don't wear shoes around your home, I would suggest going without them and not worrying about that detail. In studio, it is up to you, but typically, unless requested, I do not focus on a full body shot with the entire family.
I hope this helps you!
