Chicago High-Rise Newborn Photography
Boy, do I love to photograph in Chicago high-rises.
THE LIGHT IS PHENOMENAL.
It is a photographer's dream up there! At least for this photographer! Drool worthy floor to ceiling windows make the session's lighting exceptional in most buildings. Plus baby does not have to travel during those sensitive first weeks after birth. And either does mom! BONUS!
Most of the time I am able to expose to have the city show through in some of the images too!
Baby is totally always the focus, but having the city they were born in and the view from where you rocked your newborn to sleep in some photos is truly a blessing for memories later! I have been blessed to have been hired by many clients that live in these beautiful condos and apartments throughout the city of Chicago. Today, I am sharing some of my favorite images from a few different high-rise locations around our amazing City.
And YES! I do bring all of the props, baby posing materials, and camera gear all the way up with me!

3 Quick Tips For Lighting Your Newborn Photography Session:
1. Even though there is a ton of light - you do not need it all! Sometimes too much light is a bad thing... natural or not. If they have shades or curtains, use them to block out light from one or two sides of the room, depending on how strong the light is coming in from each direction. The point is to NOT have even light coming from all directions, but to have a "main" light source that is approximately 2x stronger than the "fill" light source.
2. Make sure the "main" light window is always shining down on the baby (from forehead to chin). You do not want the most light shooting up the baby's face (chin to forehead) this creates an affect on the baby's face similar to an adult holding up a flashlight to the bottom of their chin pointing upwards (like the way we told ghost stories back in the day).
3. Use a diffuser - diffusion fabric comes in a lot of shapes, materials, and sizes. I often will use white sheers when photographing in the later morning hours of East facing condos. The sun can be very intense coming through the windows at that time and sometimes too harsh for the soft lighting I am looking for when photographing newborns.
