Clothing Advice & Ideas for Your Family's Holiday Photos by Scarlett Photography
You are here because you want to look great for your family photos! I have been photographing families for over 15 years and LOVE the Christmas season more than any other season and am here to share my best tips! I have put together this guide to make finding your outfits EASY!
These images will most likely end up on your holiday cards. And if you were wondering if you should send holiday cards this year, do it! I don't know one person who doesn't love to receive Christmas, Kwanzaa, Winter Wishes, Happy Holidays, whatever you celebrate this time of year Cards. They bring Joy, I promise, they are worth it to light up people's days this time of year and show off how proud you are of your growing family! Send me one too, please! I love seeing our work come together in Christmas cards. I even save my favorites each year and hang them year after year! I typically get about 50 Christmas cards every year, but I am looking for 100 this year, so please, send me/your photographer one too! It definitely makes me feel special! I will be sending you one too!
Anywhere, here we go, I am going to keep this simple and to the point, since we are all busy this time of year. If you are a client of mine and you have specific questions about what you plan to wear, snap a picture and email/text it to me and I can help with feedback/any questions you have. Also, remember these are suggestions, not hard rules. Overall, you should be YOU in your holiday photos.
Whenever you are going to get professional photos, I would always AVOID:
1. Shirts with big distracting logos (or any logo at all if you can avoid it)
2. Shirts with tiny text you think people will be able to read - more than likely, there is no flattering way to pose you and your family to show the front of everyone's shirts. It's also not likely you will be able to read the message anyway. These are fun to take at home, but if you're spending the time and money to get professional photos taken, I would suggest skipping this idea.
3. Completely matching. People still do this, and it makes me cringe. The only exception is Christmas PJs - but even then, when everyone wears the same busy pattern, your eye has nowhere to land in a photo and it's just a mess of pattern, no one pays attention to your faces - which is why we take photos - to show our beautiful and unique faces to our friends and family. And if you come into my studio with matching PJs I won't say a thing, the deed is done, Haha, but again, these are pictures I suggest for Christmas Eve at home in front of the tree.
4 Outfit Combinations for Your Family Photos
While I think you need to take into consideration your Holiday or Christmas Background and Scene you will be photographing in, here are some great options for your holiday photos.
1) Red/Burgandy/Green/Black Holiday Clothing Combinations for Darker Backgrounds
2) Cream/Blush/White/Navy/Gray/Gold for Lighter Backgrounds (can also work on darker backgrounds)
3) Family Pjs - My suggestion is pick one pattern you love, dress one or two people in it and then dress the rest of the family in solid colors pulled from the main patterned PJ. This helps the images look put together, but not overwhelmed with patterns. I suggest you do this for any clothing choices including busy patterns.
4) Outdoor and/or warmer clothing for winter backdrops and outdoor locations make the most sense, but even a long sleeve dress/outfit with a cute hat and other winter accessories works well to complete the scene.
